Ausstellung des Informationszentrum GeoPark mit einer großen Landkarte

GeoPark Ruhrgebiet Information Centre

Coal, sandstone and clay – three raw materials from one mountain were used at the Nachtigall colliery. This makes the museum an ideal starting point for voyages of discovery into the history of the Earth. Visit our GeoPark Ruhrgebiet information centre and set off from here into the Muttental valley with its numerous geological outcrops and the mining history hiking trail.

Hands-on geological history

Hard coal, sandstone, iron ore and rock salt are the raw materials on which the Ruhr region is built. Rarely can one gain such a good insight into the history of the Earth as here. The GeoPark Ruhrgebiet conveys the diversity of raw materials, their origins and their benefits for humans. An information centre has been set up at the Nachtigall colliery.

The Ruhr Area GeoPark was designated a National GeoPark by the Alfred Wegener Foundation in 2006. Alongside the Vulkaneifel, the Nördlinger Ries and the Muskau Arch, the region is one of the most geologically exciting areas in Germany.

At the information centre, visitors can embark on a journey of discovery through the history of the Earth. Here, they can learn everything about GeoParks, the National Geotope Muttental and the Ruhr area as a source of raw materials in an entertaining way.

The museum is also an ideal starting point for exploring the Muttental National Geotope with its geological outcrops and mining history trail, or for setting off on a hike along the GeoRoute Ruhr.
