Let yourself be pampered in a relaxed atmosphere amidst the idyllic natural surroundings of the Nachtigall colliery. The perfect place to refresh yourself with cool drinks in a historic setting after a walk or bike ride along the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route.

How to get there

By Car

A 43, Witten-Heven exit, Herbeder Straße to B 235/B 226, turn right onto Ruhrstraße B 235, after the Ruhr bridge turn right onto Nachtigallstraße.

Parking
Visitors can use the ‘Parkplatz Nachtigallstraße’ car park. The footpath* from there to the museum is 1.3 kilometres long (approx. 18 minutes' walking time*).

Of the 7 car parking spaces located in the immediate vicinity of the museum entrance, 2 parking spaces are reserved for wheelchair users and people with walking disabilities.

*Walking distance from the Nachtigallstraße car park to the museum: Follow Nachtigallstraße westwards. Keep left before the level crossing at the Zeche Theresia colliery and light railway museum. Follow the road until it turns into a narrower forest path. Follow the forest path past the Witten Nature Conservation Group's natural garden and cross the railway crossing behind the Nachtigall colliery stop. The path now leads back to Nachtigallstraße. Turn left here. Finally, cross the railway tracks again. The entrance to the LWL Museum Nachtigall Colliery can be seen on the left.

By Bus and Train

Take the S 5 or RB 40 to Witten Central Station.
From there, walk along Herbeder Straße and Im Sundern, walking time approx. 20 minutes.

Walking route from Witten Central Station:
After leaving the station grounds, turn left on the same side of the street (you are now on Bergerstraße). After approx. 150 metres, turn left and follow Herbeder Straße until you reach a roundabout. At the roundabout, keep left again and walk along the B226. You will come to another roundabout. Here, keep left again and take the second exit. After 150 metres, turn right onto Im Sundern and follow the road for 500 metres until you reach the Nachtigallbrücke bridge. Cross the bridge and turn right onto Muttentalstraße. Shortly afterwards, you will see the museum entrance on your left.

Taking the dog to the museum

Dogs are allowed on a leash in the outdoor area, with the exception of the playground. However, dogs are not allowed in the buildings or in the tunnels.

Only guide dogs and assistance dogs are allowed in the buildings.

Shopping at the museum

The museum shop at the Nachtigall Colliery sells books, Ruhr region souvenirs, toys and products from the LWL Museums of Industrial Heritage, such as miners' towels.
